St. Sebastian Council 14255 has scheduled a special First Degree initiation ceremony for new members Tuesday, August 28, to commemorate the 160th birthday of the order’s founder, the Venerable Fr. Michael J. McGivney. Prospective members will meet at Forest Lodge at 6:45pm.
Father McGivney founded the Knights of Columbus in New Haven, Connecticut in 1882 as a fraternal benevolent organization that would unite men of Catholic faith. He also wanted to provide for the families of deceased parishioners, many of whom were Civil War veterans with few assets.
Today, the Knights of Columbus is the largest Catholic lay organization in the world, with 1.8 million members. Its benevolence program has evolved into one of the highest rated insurance companies in the U.S.
The St. Sebastian KofC was formed in 2007 and -- with approximately 150 members -- is now one of the largest organizations in the parish.
